With Alaina Nettles finishing up a long, outstanding career for Cane Bay High School in 2022-23, it’s a different world for the Cobras girls basketball team as the winter approaches.
The Cobras return just one starter and some sparingly used lettermen from a squad that won 18 games and finished second in Region 6-5A. Nettles has been all-state multiple times, won Class 5A player of the year honors as a senior, and now plays at Charleston Southern.
Nettles leaves a massive void after averaging 20 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 5.2 steals.
“It’s a lot different with her not here,” said Ira Owens, Cane Bay head coach. “She could do so much.”
Owens’ bunch also lost three of the other four steady scorers from 2022-23.
The most experienced player returning is sophomore guard LaChar Lawrence, who will run the point for the first part of the season. Lawrence averaged 7.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.6 steals as a freshman. She’s probably more of a shooting guard but has put the team first moving to the point.
“She doesn’t have any problem running the point, but she’s stepping into a brand new role for her,” Owens said. “She’s doing what she has to do to help the team. We’ve got two or three other girls who could eventually move into that spot, allowing (Lawrence) to move off the ball.”
Junior Kimora Carmichael, sophomore Annysha Ziegler, freshman Jasmine Dargan, junior Kalayshia Bennett, junior Amani Merrell, junior Natalya Hahn, and sophomore Cierra Wilkins are also in the running for playing time in the backcourt. Each player brings something different to the table.
Senior forward Zahnyra Young, senior forward Ella Hill, junior forward Tanijha Vickers, and junior forward Loran Hadden are getting work in the frontcourt. Young and Hill are around 6 feet tall and will be counted on for rebounds and offensive power moves. Hadden and Vickers are transfers.
“We have some talent, but these girls have to learn to play together and get some chemistry,” Owens said. “The new girls are learning the system, and the returning girls are getting back into the groove. They play hard. I think we have a chance to be good once things come together.”
Cane Bay begins the regular season against Hanahan Monday, Nov. 27, and travels to Timberland Wednesday, Nov. 29. The Cobras conclude the first week Friday, Dec. 1, at home against Andrews.

Late Sunday afternoon, our media outlet received reports regarding a pair of alleged sexual assaults – or attempted sexual assaults – on a neighborhood trail in Sanctuary Cove, part of the sprawling Cane Bay community in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
Both victims were underage females. One of the victims was nearly raped, according to our sources.
After the second assault took place, one resident reached out to us expressing concern that local authorities were “telling exactly NO one that there is a potential serial offender assaulting young girls in Cane Bay.”
“They have no problem sending out headlines for every car that has been rummaged through or elderly person that went for a long walk and may be missing … but they don’t find it a good idea to warn people their daughters could be in harms way while on the trails?” the resident asked.
We reached out to our law enforcement sources first thing Monday morning. As our inquiries were making their way up the flagpole, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) issued a news release at approximately 4:32 p.m. EST on Monday announcing it was investigating the two assaults – and searching for a specific suspect.
“On Monday, November 27 just after 8:00 p.m. (EST), Berkeley County dispatch received a call in reference to an assault,” the release noted. “Deputies arrived at the victim’s house to collect information and learned the victim was assaulted. The victim is a 14-year-old female. The victim described to investigators she was attacked from behind. Due to the way the victim was assaulted, she was unable to provide a description to investigators, initially. The investigation determined the victim was assaulted on the trails near Shadybrook Drive and Cane Bay Boulevard.”
The second incident was reported just five days later.
“On Saturday, December 2 just before 7:00 p.m., Berkeley County dispatch received a call in reference to an assault,” the release noted. “Deputies learned the victim was assaulted and dropped her phone during the incident. The victim is a 15-year-old female. The victim was able to get away from the assailant. Deputies located the victim’s phone on the trail behind Bella Vista Court. The victim was able to provide deputies with a description of the man who attacked her.”
According to the sheriff’s office, the suspect being sought in connection with the assault(s) is a “younger white male with facial hair” who has a skinny build and is approximately 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-8 inches tall. BCSO is searching for this suspect with assistance from the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).
“We are using every resource possible to identify a suspect and make an arrest,” sheriff Duane Lewis said. “Detectives are working around the clock to complete this investigation. We have also requested assistance from SLED. I am urging all parents and guardians to please not allow your children to walk alone on the trails at night. Please make sure you are aware of your surroundings.”
Lewis said his agency has increased patrols in the area as it continues to investigate the assaults and has asked Cane Bay neighbors to report any suspicious activity to Berkeley County dispatch at 843-719-4169.

SUMMERVILLE — Two teens were attacked on separate days while on trails in the Cane Bay neighborhood, the latest of which occurred Dec. 2.
According to a news release from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, the first attack occurred Nov. 27. The victim, a 14-year-old girl, told officers she was attacked from behind while walking near Shadybrook Drive and Cane Bay Boulevard.
In the second attack on Dec. 2, the victim, a 15-year-old girl, told officers she was assaulted and dropped her phone but was able to get away. The victim’s phone was found on the trail behind Bella Vista Court.
The second victim described the attacker as a young White male with facial hair, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall, with a slender build, according to the sheriff’s news release.

NORTH CHARLESTON — To continue efforts to become the Coast Guard’s “operational center of gravity” on the East Coast, officials broke ground Jan. 26 on its new $160 million campus.
This 64-acre site along the Cooper River — just south of the former naval base that closed in 1996 — will house an administration building and redesigned 1,100-foot concrete pier.
Construction is expected to begin later this year and be completed in 2026.
“This Charleston campus will have improved infrastructure that translates into more productive personnel and more efficient operations,” said Capt. Neal Armstrong, the commanding officer of facilities design and construction.
The 51,500-square-foot administration building will provide training and conference room space, and additional rooms dedicated to cutter ship support.
Sustainability is a priority, so the new facility will achieve net-zero energy usage and a net-zero carbon footprint, Armstrong said.
The current Pier November will be replaced with a pier more than three feet taller to enhance durability during coastal storms. It will provide utilities to support five national security cutters and a 90-ton crane, which is critical for dockside maintenance, Armstrong said.
During the design and construction phases nearly 60 subcontractors will support the two main contractors on the project, Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and RQ Construction LLC, providing work for nearly 900 people.
Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Linda Fagan, who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony, said every Coast Guard mission begins and ends at a shore facility. When the ships are not at sea, they need a base that can provide necessary maintenance, she added.
The missions conducted at Base Charleston are vital to protecting national security and economic prosperity, Fagan said, adding that the new campus will aid in “lifesaving work,” including patrolling the waters for smuggled narcotics.

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) – A family living in one Berkeley County community said they have not been receiving their mail on a regular basis, even after contacting postal officials. That’s when they reached out to News 2’s Raymond Owens.
“We moved here about a year and a half ago and over the past year or so we have had problems with sporadic mail delivery,” said Cane Bay resident Tim Jacintho. “It doesn’t show up when it’s supposed to; it now has gotten to where we’re getting mail maybe two or three days a week.”
He said a lot of people depend on the mail for prescription medications, Social Security checks, and other items. He said everyone is frustrated with the situation.
Jacintho said he and other Cane Bay residents have reached out to the Summerville Post Office with their concerns.
“She’s been telling me what’s going on- they’ve had a lot of turnover with contractors, and they’re shorthanded. She said that the growth in the Cane Bay/Nexton area, which they serve, has put too much stress on the post office. They don’t have the staff or the facility to handle it.”
He contacted Congressman Nancy Mace’s office, and his state representative and state senator. He has not heard back from them. He said Berkeley County Supervisor Johnny Cribb returned his message.
“He, like, within a few hours, and said no thanks for reporting it. He said he can’t really do anything. It’s at the federal level.
Finally, he reached out to News 2 for help.
“I reached out to you because certainly I’m frustrated with the situation here and I know that my fellow neighbors and residents are also very frustrated,” he said.
News 2’s Raymond Owens called Congresswoman Mace’s office. Their office called Jacintho back and told him they would look into the problem.
We also called the postal service – their spokeswoman said she is researching the issue to learn more and will get back to us. They later provided the following response:

The Postal Service will continue flexing our available resources to match the workload, in addition to hosting more hiring events until all positions are filled. We appreciate the patience of our customers and the efforts of employees as conditions change on a day-to-day basis.
